The Spirit of Special Olympics award is an award that is given to a student athlete who is the most energetic and participates in many events at the Special Olympics. Ethan Martinez-Hill, a senior here at LHS, participated in the Special Olympics earlier this year and was given a trophy for being the “Spirit of Special Olympics.” When asked about his reaction to the trophy, Ethan said that he was completely surprised, since he had no idea he was going to win the award until his name was called. He said he was so happy to win the award because he participated and worked hard in many events. His favorite of those events was basketball and he smiled proudly when telling us about it. He said when he wasn’t participating in his events, he liked cheering his friends on and watching them bowl, race each other, and play basketball. He made sure to get lots of pictures of himself holding the trophy because he was very proud of it. When asked who inspires him to be so energetic and an all-around great guy, he stated that his mom and sister were his inspiration. He said that since his mom and sister are so sweet and energetic and positive, he is always like that, too. After graduation, Ethan hopes to get a job so he can “make a lot of money.” He said he would love to work at Starbucks and be a barista because he already has some experience with making different types of drinks from working in the school’s coffee shop in the mornings. We had a great time talking to Ethan and we are all extremely proud of him for winning the Spirit of Special Olympics award. He definitely deserves it for being so polite to everyone and always offering to shake someone’s hand or give them a hug when talking to them. Congratulations, Ethan!
